BiBi

Artist from Nigeria

Bibi, a young and energetic Nigerian artist, was originally born as Bridget Oronya. She was born on the third of March 1986 in Lagos. Everybody calls her Bibi since then.

Bibi was brought up by a single parent. Her family situation created a very close relationship between Bibi and her three sisters. Because her mother struggled to feed the four girls she spent a lot of time away from home, so the girls mostly raised each other. Beside the daily struggle to survive, the girls started to show their first creative abilities by drawing and creating people out of paper. By using the slimy rapper from cigarettes they designed clothes for them and they created scenes of whole families and the way those people were fulfilling their daily needs or taking care of each other. These themes often come back in Bibi's work.

Due to safety reasons caused by the situation in Nigeria in the early ninety's, Bibi's mother sent the girls to Ivory Coast. Bibi was 7 years old at the time. The girls stayed there for six months and came back to Nigeria on their own, leaded by the eldest sister, who was only 11 years old then. This adventurous journey was the first of many and all these journeys still inspire Bibi in her work.

Four years ago, Bibi met mister Wole, a 70 years old artist from Ife. Together they started a creative "journey", to develop each others talents.

Bibi is combining different styles. She's working with oil and glue on canvas, with ink or... with every material that fits her creative boost of the moment. Her work is difficult to describe with only a few words, it varies from traditional to modern African, from semi-abstract to abstract or symbolic, from rough to extremely elegant. But... all of it is very colourful in a relaxing way.

Art with a feminine touch! Enjoy...
